Tiki Time at The Reef: Fish, Chips, and Supporting Restaurants That Support US

    Escape to a Tiki Hideaway

📍 Restaurant Name & Website: The Reef
🌟 Must-Try Dish: Uni (Sea Urchin) with Quail Egg & Fresh Wasabi
    💰 Price Range: Affordable
    🏝️Atmosphere: Tiki Bar
🗺️ Location: 411 E Palm Canyon Dr, Palm Springs, CA 92264
🔥 Insider Tip: Grab a patio seat for a view of the pool!

Inside the Caliente Tropics Hotel, The Reef is a retro tiki bar where kitsch reigns supreme. Think bamboo walls, colorful décor, and an easygoing crowd sipping Mai Tais with little paper umbrellas. I snagged a shaded patio spot, to soak up Gilligan’s Island vibes while people-watching.

    Crunch, Crisp, and Everything Fried

    Fish and Chips

🐟 Fish and Chips: Crispy golden batter, light and shattering with every bite, reveals flaky, tender fish. A dunk in tangy tartar sauce? Perfect.

🍟 Salty Fries – Simple, classic, no gimmicks—just hot, crispy goodness.

🥗 Creamy Coleslaw – Cool, tangy, and just sweet enough to balance the fried perfection.

    Tiki Drinks Done Right 🍹

There are those that say you don’t go to a tiki bar without ordering a cocktail. I went for lunch and had to get back to work though so no Mai Tais for me. Their cocktail menu has all the classics.

🔥 The Zombie – Citrus, rum, and spice (not for the faint of heart!)
    🍍 Painkiller –
Pineapple, coconut, dark rum—like a piña colada with a kick.
    🍊 Navy Grog –
A citrusy, boozy throwback to classic tiki culture.

A Bold Stand: Drinks That Align with Values

Beyond the great food and cocktails, The Reef is putting its money where its mouth is.  with a major policy shift.

Owner Rory Snyder announced that The Reef and its sister restaurant, Sancho’s, will only serve alcohol from states and regions that align with their community’s values. That means no more Kentucky Bourbon.

For many diners, supporting businesses that align with their values matters—and The Reef is walking the talk. It’s a bold move and one that may come with some blowback. Which is part of the reason I am spending my queer dollars there.

So, raise a tiki mug to great food, strong drinks, and businesses that stand for something. 🌊🍹

  • Otori Sushi: My Go-To Sushi in the Desert

Otori Sushi: My Go-To Sushi in the Desert

    Fresh, Affordable, and Unpretentious

📍 Restaurant Name & Website: Otori Sushi
🍽️ Cuisine Type: Japanese / Sushi Bar
🌟 Must-Try Dish: Uni (Sea Urchin) with Quail Egg & Fresh Wasabi
    💰 Price Range: Affordable
🎶 Atmosphere: Casual, comfortable, and welcoming
🗺️ Location: 68100 Ramon Rd Ste A1, Cathedral City, CA 92234
🔥 Insider Tip: They offer fresh wasabi, a rarity even at high-end sushi bars—ask for it!

Otori Sushi isn’t the kind of place that relies on sleek décor or over-the-top presentation to make an impression. Instead, it’s a comfortable, unfussy sushi bar where quality and freshness take center stage. Whether you’re a casual sushi fan or a connoisseur hunting for the best bite of Otoro (fatty tuna belly), this spot delivers without breaking the bank.

Sushi has been a part of my life since I was very young. My mother used to take me out to sushi when we visited my grandmother in LA in the 70s. At the time, I only knew to drink milk, water, and apple juice, as we did not have soda at home (hippie parents). So, I would order a glass of milk; looking back, I can only imagine the horror the sushi chefs must have felt. But they sent someone out to pick up some milk for this little toe-headed kid. #ProTip, DO NOT ORDER MILK AT THE SUSHI BAR! Then in high school I had the opportunity to live in Japan as a Rotary Exchange student. That experience shaped my appreciation for Japanese cuisine—I love sushi.

It’s why I’m always on the hunt for authentic sushi experiences, and Otori Sushi is where I find that balance of freshness, affordability, and craftsmanship here in the desert. I am also a bit of a sushi purist. I want to taste the fish, not sriracha mayo, not truffled eel sauce or Thai sweet chili.

    Sushi Platter

The Sushi Lineup: A Journey Through Freshness

We went all in, sampling a variety of sushi, sashimi, and classic accompaniments. Here’s what stood out:

🍣 My dad had the Chirashi Bowl—a bowl of assorted sashimi artfully arranged over sushi rice. This is probably his favorite thing to order at sushi; he gets it almost every time.

🐟 Maguro (Tuna) & Yellowtail (Hamachi) – Silky, clean flavors with just the right firmness—when there is nothing to hide it the flavor of the fish really shines.

🦐 Sweet Shrimp (Ama Ebi) with Fried Shrimp Heads – The sweetness of the raw shrimp and the crisp, rich crunch of the deep-fried heads. Provides a perfect textural experience. But I understand that fried shrimp heads are not everyone’s cup of green tea.

🐟 Mackerel (Saba) – The saba they cure in-house brings that signature oily briny intensity that mackerel fans appreciate.

    Uni

🌊 Uni (Sea Urchin) with Quail Egg – The meal’s standout. Uni is another dish that may not be everyone’s favorite order, but for me, there is little I love more. Otori’s is fantastically fresh and only available when they can source it properly- sweet, oceanic, creamy, and a little funky. Adding quail egg gives it an extra level of richness and indulgence.

🐟 Tuna Belly (Otoro) – The crown jewel of sushi. The sheer fattiness of the was positively luscious.

🍜 Miso Soup – A comforting and umami-packed start to the meal, setting the stage for what was to come.

🍺 Echigo Beer – A crisp, refreshing Japanese rice lager that paired well with the delicate flavors of the sushi.

    The Rarity of Fresh Wasabi

One of the things that sets Otori Sushi apart is its offering of fresh wasabi—a rarity even at some of the finest sushi establishments. If you’ve never had real wasabi (as opposed to the bright green paste made from horseradish and mustard), it’s amazing. Fresh wasabi has a nuanced, slightly sweet heat that enhances the fish rather than overpowers it.

Instead of the sinus-clearing kick of imitation wasabi, the fresh version adds a subtle, lingering warmth, complementing rather than masking the delicate flavors of the sushi. If you appreciate authenticity, this alone is worth the visit.

    Sushi Etiquette: A Quick Tip

Ama Ebi with Fried Shrimp heads

One thing I learned during my time in Japan? Less is more when it comes to soy sauce. Many people drown their sushi in it, but the proper way is to lightly dip (fish side down, never the rice).  And fresh wasabi? I will dab a bit on the fish, rather than mixed into the soy sauce dish.

    Why Otori Sushi Stands Out

Unpretentious & Welcoming – Whether you’re new to sushi or a seasoned pro, the staff at Otori make you feel at home. They’re knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating—even for dietary restrictions.

💰 Affordable for the Quality – Sushi of this caliber often comes with a steep price tag, but you get top-tier fish without the sticker shock here.

🐟 Freshness is Paramount – There were no off flavors, no dull textures—just pristine seafood.

🔥 That Fresh Wasabi! – It’s rare, it’s exceptional, and if you love sushi, you need to try it. (I don’t know if you can tell but I really love the fresh wasabi)

    Final Thoughts

Otori Sushi proves that great sushi doesn’t have to be served in a high-end setting to be memorable. It’s a place you return to again and again, where the fish is always fresh, the service is warm, and the experience leaves you satisfied yet already planning your next visit.

  • Cipolline Osteria: A Cozy Italian Gem

Cipolline Osteria: A Cozy Italian Gem

An Evening of Italian Comfort and Timeless Tunes

📍 Restaurant Name & Website: Cipolline Osteria 🍽️ Cuisine Type: Italian
🌟 Must-Try Dish: Tagliatelle al Ragù
    💰 Price Range: Moderate
🎶 Atmosphere: Casual neighborhood Italian with live music
    🗺️ Location: Palm Springs, CA
🔥 Insider Tip: Don’t skip the Mezcal Negroni—a smoky, sophisticated twist on a classic.

Some restaurants feel like they’ve been part of a neighborhood forever, and in a way Cipolline has been, as this is the second time this restaurant has been in  this spot.

Tucked into the Curve District of Palm Springs, Cipolline exudes warmth. The night I visited, the atmosphere was buzzing—not too loud, not too quiet. Just right. Dim lighting, exposed brick, and warm wooden tables set a relaxed and intimate mood, making it a perfect spot for both date nights and casual get-togethers. As I sipped my Mezcal Negroni, a singer with a voice eerily reminiscent of Frank Sinatra crooned in the background, setting the perfect scene for a Friday date night. The service was just as inviting—attentive but never intrusive. Our server, who had a knack for dad jokes, kept us entertained every time he stopped by, adding a touch of humor to the evening.

We were seated in the bar/lounge area when a Canadian couple turned to my husband and asked, “Are you two twins?”—a question we get more often than you’d think. I was on my second cocktail of the evening and was very tempted to respond, “No, but we share a lot of DNA.” Somehow, I managed to keep that zinger to myself.

    The Team Behind Cipolline Osteria

Cipolline Osteria is owned by the same team behind both El Mirasol and El Mirasol at los Arboles, two of Palm Springs’ beloved Mexican restaurants. Known for their warm hospitality, the owners have brought back their expertise and passion for great food into this Italian venture.

    Mezcal Negroni

    Sipping Perfection: The Mezcal Negroni

I’ve love a Negroni and I love Mezcal. The combo of the two is probably my favorite cocktail so I was very pleased to see it on the menu. The smoky depth of mezcal added intrigue to the usual bitter-sweet Campari and vermouth mix. It was strong but balanced, a drink that can truly be savored. It had been a long day and I was really looking forward to this cocktail, luckily it shined.

A Classic Lineup of Italian Comforts

The menu at Cipolline is rooted in classic Italian flavors, executed with care.

🥗 Classic Caesar Salad with White Anchovies

    Classic Cesar Salad

I’m a bit of a purist when it comes to Caesar salads. This one checked all the right boxes. Crisp cold romaine, a dressing rich with umami, house-made croutons that shattered with every bite, and  my favorite briny, meaty white anchovies. FLAWLESS!!!

    Tagliatelle al Ragù

    🍝 Tagliatelle al Ragù

If you judge an Italian restaurant by its pasta (and you should), Cipolline more than delivers. Their house-made tagliatelle was cooked to a perfect al dente, with just the right amount of bite. The ragù was deep, meaty, and balanced with acidity, coating every strand of pasta without drowning it. I have worked in some great Italian restaurants and this ragu was a fine example. The tagliatelle al ragù has roots in Bologna, where the tradition of slow-simmering meat sauces dates back to the 18th century. Here, Cipolline keeps that tradition alive, honoring its heritage with a beautifully executed dish.

🍫 Chocolate Budino with Mixed Berry Compote & Espresso Whipped Cream

Chocolate Budino with Mixed Berry Compote & Espresso Whipped Cream

Our waiter tricked us into ordering dessert —and I’m glad he did. This chocolate budino was very smooth and velvety, with an intensely rich chocolate flavor. The acidity of the berry compote contrasted perfectly with the richness of the dessert, keeping it from feeling too heavy. The espresso-infused whipped cream added a light bitterness that balanced everything beautifully. The contrast of flavors and textures—the creamy pudding, airy whip, and sharp sugary berries—made every bite an indulgence.

Why Cipolline Osteria Deserves a Spot on Your List

Palm Springs has no shortage of Italian restaurants, but Cipolline Osteria stands out for its effortlessly welcoming vibe, house-made pastas, and live music that adds an unexpected touch of nostalgia. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or making a night of it, this spot feels like home.

  • Biting into Aspen Mills: A Lunch Spot with Big Flavor

Biting into Aspen Mills: A Lunch Spot with Big Flavor

    A Legacy of Baking Excellence

📍 Restaurant Name & Website: Aspen Mills Bakery & Cafe
🍽️ Cuisine Type: Bakery & Cafe
🌟 Must-Try Dish: The Tuscany Sandwich
    💰 Price Range: Affordable
🎶 Atmosphere: Cozy, casual, and filled with the scent of fresh-baked bread
🗺️ Location: Multiple locations in the Coachella Valley (I went to the Palm Springs Location, 555 South Sunrise Way)
🔥 Insider Tip: Grab a loaf of their bread to take home!

Aspen Mills Bakery & Cafe has been baking breads, muffins, cookies, and pies for nearly 30 years. They offer 30 different breads, although not all of them are available every day, all made from stone-ground wheat flour.

    Beyond Baking

Although they may be best known for their breads, Aspen Mills is so much more than that. I have been eating their sandwiches and salads since my first visit to Palm Springs 25 years ago.  Whether you’re stopping by for a quick bite or taking home a loaf of their signature bread, Aspen Mills offers something for every taste.

The lemon poppy seed muffins—are light, moist, and bursting with citrus flavor. Each bite is a perfect balance of sweet and tangy, with a crisp, sugary top that adds the perfect bit of texture. It’s a must-try treat alongside your morning coffee or as an afternoon pick-me-up.

A Lunch Built on Fresh Bread and Simplicity

When you walk into Aspen Mills Bakery & Cafe, the warm aroma of fresh-baked bread is almost a meal unto itself. This isn’t a fancy lunch spot—there’s no fancy plating or white-tablecloth service. Your sandwich arrives on a paper plate, plastic silverware at the ready, with a pickle and a side of creamy potato salad.

Wooden tables are scattered inside, with loaves of bread stacked neatly for purchase—tempting you to make room in your panty. The large outdoor seating area is a great spot for people-watching, a mix of locals and seasonal snowbirds enjoying lunch in our glorious desert weather.

    The Tuscany

The Tuscany: An Italian Classic with a Bakery Twist

As you come to know me, you will discover that I have a weakness for salty cured pork products, so I couldn’t resist ordering The Tuscany, a sandwich that promised the bold flavors of an Italian deli. One bite, and I was hooked. The honey-glazed ham, prosciutto, and capicola layered together in a perfect balance of salty, smoky goodness. The provolone cheese added a creamy contrast, while the pepperoncini and roasted red bell peppers provided a tangy, slightly spicy kick. To be honest, I could have done with a few more of those roasted bell peppers and pepperoncini and a little less shredded lettuce, but I will keep that in mind for next time.

The freshly baked Italian baguette—was strong enough to hold all that filling without falling apart. Their house-made Italian dressing tied it all together, adding a fresh, herbaceousness and a little bite of acid to cut through the fat.

For a completely different experience, I also tried The Aspen—a sandwich that felt like a tribute to fall flavors.  Oven-roasted turkey breast provided a hearty base, but it was the cranberry spice bread that made this sandwich stand out. Slightly sweet with warm spices, the cool crunch of cucumber, creamy avocado, and the mild bite of red onion provided lovely contracting textures and flavors. The horseradish and light mayo added just the right amount of zing without overpowering the delicate flavors.

This sandwich feels comforting and fresh at the same time.

Why Aspen Mills is a Coachella Valley Must-Try

What sets Aspen Mills apart isn’t just the sandwiches—it’s the bread. With options like sweet dark rye, jalapeño cheddar, honey wheat, and the legendary cranberry spice, this is the kind of place where the bread is never an afterthought.

Whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch, picking up a loaf for later, or just lingering over coffee at an outdoor table, this spot is a true local favorite.

And if you are in Palm Springs for the holidays, make sure you try the Kentucky Derby pie made with chocolate and pecans. It’s my go-to holiday pie—rich, nutty, and the perfect sweet treat after a satisfying lunch.
